Here’s some new software for Windows 7 called Connectify which allows you to turn your Windows 7 laptop into a wireless hotspot. Basically, it converts your laptop into a wireless router of sorts, acting as a wireless access point for computers and wireless devices.  It’s essentially like creating your own wifi hotspot like the ones at Starbucks and other retailers.

It was developed by a military consulting firm called Nomadio and it allows other wireless devices to ‘tether’’ themselves to a single Internet connection. It’s secure too as the software encrypts traffic in both directions using WPA2-Personal encryption. Check out the demo video below:

This would be especially useful at airports to share the expensive Wi-Fi with friends or simply for extending your home WiFi without paying through the nose for a wireless router.

Learn how to install Windows 7 and Ubuntu on the same hard drive so you aren’t restricted to the limitations of one or the other.  With this guide, you can dual boot the opposing operating systems and run them in perfect harmony on the same computer.

What You’ll Need:

• Windows 7 installation disk
• Ububtu 9.10 installation image
• Finally, don’t forget to back up your data beforehand.

How it Works:

To put it simply, most of this guide is straightforward and easy to follow. It’s nothing too daunting and even if you’re a little intimidated by the proposition of potentially frying your PC, there’s plenty of screenshots and accurate instructions to keep you on the right track.

Windows 7 is installed first and the hard drive is then configured to accept Ubuntu. Once Ubuntu is installed, the remainder of the guide is telling you how to get them to work together without causing crashes or a complete meltdown of your computer.

This one is sure to kindle your interest . A Kindle (Amazon’s eBook reader) retails for $300.  It has a black and white screen and you have to purchase and books, newspapers, magazines, and blogs to read on it. Sure, it saves a lot of trees, but it definitely has it’s limitations.

However, hope is not lost! We’ll show you how to turn a Tablet PC into a DIY eBook reader which can search thousands of free ebooks online, far from the clutches of Amazon.  The project below is to design an eBook reader with a high resolution, full color display.  All that, at a fraction of Kindle’s cost.

The building block of his version of a personal eBook reader is a tablet PC. Though it’s not meant to be a clone, it comes pretty close. The tablet PC is born again as an eBook reader in four steps:

1. Find a cheap tablet PC

Scrounge eBay for a cheap tablet PC if you don’t have one lying around.  Older makes like Motion M1400 or Fujitsu Stylistic are recommended which can be bought for around $200.

2. Tweak the OS

The idea is to uninstall unwanted software and tweak the settings to make it more eBook reader like. For instance, a high contrast/white for the background, larger icons and remapping the buttons for page switching.

3. Install reader software

Choices are plenty with Calibre , Adobe’s PDF reader and ComicRack for eBooks. Zinio for digital mags, FeedDemon for RSS. Another suggestion is to bookmark newspaper sites like the New York Times Article Skimmer version and sites like Project Gutenberg for no-fee, copyright-free books.

4. Boot it up and enjoy!

A Wi-Fi connection really helps for instant downloads. With all the downloading done, all that’s left is to choose a quiet corner and turn the pages.  Once you get hold of a cheap tablet PC, the rest is dirt simple. Your own Kindle replacement for $200.

Learn how to setup and build your own windows server.  As we all know, digital media comes with the dangers of wear, tear and crash.

But why look towards the cloud when we have a viable solution on the ground – an easy to construct Windows Home Server.  A Windows Home Server is not only a backup failsafe but can also become an interface to stream your content over your small home network. Building your Home Server:

Step 1: Prep the case

The Antec 200 is a budget case with six 3.5-inch drive bays and easy expandability with an external easy-swap SATA bay and an adjustable fan speed switch.

2. Install the parts

Installing the components is about care and alignment. It should be done on static free surface. The tutorial details the steps from fixing the CPU on the motherboard to inserting the RAM modules and finally mounting the drives.  If you’ve never built a computer before, check out our beginner’s guide.

3. Wire and connect

With all the components in place, the attachment of the SATA data and power cables comes next. Wiring is all done with the plugging in the other components to the motherboard connectors and the chassis outlets.

4. Install Software

Windows Home Server can be installed using an external optical drive or a bootable Flash Drive. The installation is simple and user friendly. The basic installation is followed by networking the other PCs. The networking also involves setting up the WHS Connector password on client PCs. This is the time to install all the latest updates and patches for WHS.

The Settings console is where most of WHM management takes place. Configuring the WHS settings involves scheduling backups, setting up user accounts, deciding on the shared folders for media streaming, checking out the Disk Management features and installing and managing third-party add-ins. Here are 5 essential add-ins available which make WHS do a whole lot more.

5. Accessing Your Server

A server is typically not stand alone. There are four ways to remote access and manage your server.

1. Manage it from the Console software
2. Browse shared folders from Windows Explorer by typing in the network URL.
3. Using the homeserver.com domain for remote access.
4. Using Remote Desktop in the client PC to access WHS’s desktop.

6. Tweaking for Maximum Performance

Optimize the performance by tweaking settings for speed, automatic syncing, handling video formats and other enhancements. A home built server based backup solution can be designed around your needs. As this tutorial shows, it is not too difficult. Alternative home server options like HP MediaSmart LX195 and Acer easyStore H340 are also worth a look. But all home server options provide one common denominator – peace of mind.

Breaking into a computer is an illegal activity but it does help to know how to re-access your own equipment.  So, this post is for informational and ethical purposes only! This how-to covers three OS we use and the methods to crack the log-in passwords.

Windows

For Windows OS, Ophcrack is the tool of choice. It is a free Windows Password cracker based on Rainbow Tables. It has a GUI which makes it easier to run. The software can decipher passwords up to 14 characters in length in a quick 10 seconds.

To use Ophcrack one needs to download the Ophcrack ISO and burn it to a CD (or load it via a USB drive). Run the CD by loading it in the tray and restarting the computer with the power switch. Switch to the BIOS options and set the computer to boot from the CD Drive. The computer boots up and reads the Ophcrack CD which then proceeds to break the password. Use this password to log into the machine.

Ophcrack is a multi-platform software and so can be used for Mac and Linux too.

Mac OS X

Apart from Ophcrack, another simple method involves using the Mac OS X installation CD (for v10.4). Insert and reboot to display UTILITIES. Choose RESET PASSWORD to get a new one. Login using this password. To reset the password in Mac OS X 10.5, reboot the computer and press COMMAND + S.

At the prompt type in:

sck -fy
mount -uw /
launchctl load /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.DirectoryServices.plist
dscl . -passwd /Users/UserName newpassword

Login with the new reset password.

Linux

Power on the computer, press the ESC key and on the boot loader (GRUB) screen select the ‘Recovery Mode’. Press the ‘B’ Key to enter the single user mode. At the default prompt, type in ‘passwd’ and key in your new password. For access to a single account on the system type ‘passwd username’ replacing ‘username’ with the login name for the account you would reset the password for.

A lesson in cracking is also a lesson in security. Joe Tech’s article advocates the use of encryption (Blowfish or AES-128) as a failsafe against password breach.

If anything can go wrong, it will. This means although it can be a bit tedious, we always need to backup our computers. Data backup is not only good practice; it’s an essential one. It may be a spanking new computer or a jalopy for the digital world, data backup is as important as a virus scan or keeping a firewall.

Think of all the files accumulated over the years…one snafu and oops it’s gone. Good news is that data backup solutions can fill that gap for you. It’s out there…it’s easy and importantly, it’s free. One of the backup solutions is built right into your operating system, some of it is on the web and some can be provided by a kind friend.

The Basics:

The easiest and most accessible backup is obviously on another networked computer. Simple file sharing between two computers makes it a routine of copy and paste. Configuration is slightly different among the different systems (Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7). Native Mac backups or with a PC are also pretty much covered.

Manual backups are like heavy duty lifting. Backup utilities like IdleBackup (Windows) and SilverKeeper (Mac OS X) automatically sync folders for you, relieving a lot of the work load.

1. Simple File Storage Sites

Cloud computing is upon us and so why not take a look at some online solutions. Of course, you can go for full system backups which are available at a premium. But we did mention ‘Free’ in the title. A lot of online file storage companies’ offer ample space for free though falling short of complete system backups. Backing up your stuff online thus calls for cherry-picking essential files and safekeeping them online.

Here are a few in the queue:

• Windows Live Skydrive: A total of 25GB for free with a per file size limit of 50MB.
• File Factory: 100GB of free storage with a 300MB file limit. Downer could be the slow speeds.
• Dropbox: For smaller needs – offers 2GB of free storage with neat file syncing features.
• Mozy: 2GB of free storage but with a handy Windows client that makes uploading a cinch.
• Orbit Files: 6GB but with limited choices.

2. Documents, Photos, Music and Videos

Yes, some of these websites do double over for file storage needs. You probably use them every day but never looked at them from this angle.

-  Docs: For your documents, why go any further than the trio of Google Docs, Office Live and Zoho.

- Pics: For your photos, make your online accounts with Flickr, Snapfish, Picasa, Photobucket or Facebook.

-  Tunes: For music, MP3Tunes, File Factory and Deezer sound really cool.

- Vids: For videos, you can give YouTube, Vimeo and Viddler a shot.

The Gizmodo referred choices are aplenty and free. Just remember to do a full or a selective backup. It could be a safety net for a crash.
