We’re plenty familiar with the famous phasers of Star Trek, set to stun or kill and now you can build your own blue laser phaser gun.  Taking the shell from a toy laser gun, this modder user two blu-ray laser diodes.  Although blu-ray lasers can be expensive, you may be able to salvage them from disc drives or buy them on eBay.  Learn how to make one below.

How to Build Your Own:

The video above demonstrates how to make a blu-ray laser for less than $100.  The major cost in the project is the blu-ray diode itself.  Otherwise, the tutorial is very straightforward and demonstrates step by step how you can recreate the laser gun.  Below is  video of the first gun in action.

While you may not have a mile of open land and a huge pneumatic compressor, the odds are you have some odds and ends to build some of these more manageable cannons, catapults, trebuchet, and bazookas:

1. DIY Pumpkin Bazooka and Apple Cannon

   “For those of you who have already made a potato gun, apple cannons and pumpkin bazookas are the next advanced step, taking fun to the next level because the fun is proportional to the size of the vegetable projectile. An apple cannon is slightly bigger than a spud gun, while the “pumpzooka” is big enough that it’s easier to fire as if it were a mortar.”

Besides vegetables, you can actually use the power of air to launch massive smoke rings, or even be powerful enough to knock down a brick wall:

The project is a 30 hour build from start to finish. The start is with precise blueprints. Medium density fiberboard cut and shaped, forms the template for the gun.

The different parts of the gun are finely held together using fiber boards of different thickness with a mix of aluminum (for the lower support rod) and steel (for the upper barrel pipe). Molded styrene went into the finish for the gun grips, the cell eject lever and front barrel area.

Smaller details were filled in with countersunk Phillips screws for the recessed areas and Apoxie Sculpt for the raised pucks on the grip and stock.

But the gun would be just a block of assembled wood without the paint job.  A coat of primer followed up with acrylic paints and matte tones gives it that weathered through-many-a-battle look.  As acknowledged by Harrison, the gun is a hasty make. More detailing and you could some mutants of your own with this FPS laser shooter in your hands.

You wouldn’t want to be in close range of this beastly pneumatic ping pong ball gun. A ping pong ball is hardly destructive. But filled with water and propelled by compressed air, the tiny balls become painful projectiles. How painful? Well, the ball penetrated through plywood board and drywall.

The gun is long barreled and carries a magazine of 14 ping pong balls filled with water. The magazine is a short cylinder which holds the 14 shots and loads them one at a time into the long barrel with a press of a trigger. The second press of the trigger pneumatically pressurizes the gun. Press the trigger again and the air gets released through a valve. The sheer pneumatic force launches the ping pong ball.

Everyone enjoys a good explosion or long distance launch.  Learn to build your own canon project uses a simple ingredient – dry ice (frozen carbon dioxide) which goes directly from solid to gas. The process called sublimation releases a lot of the built up pressure.  Consider this…1 pound of dry ice turns to gas and gives you 250 liters of gas! That’s a lot of gas and a lot of latent propellant. The water fast tracks the form change of the dry ice creating an explosive propellant.

It’s essential to pay attention to the build of the canon itself with all that charged up gas. Over pressurization is a hazard. Note the careful mechanism of the canon in the video. The canon is entirely made up of steel and tightly welded together. A PET bottle is connected to the explosion chamber using a CNC adapter. Dry ice is poured into the PET bottle and water is injected through another bottle to trigger the process. The escaping gas launches a front loaded projectile through the barrel.

The added exhaust valve acts as a pressure release valve and is the first safety feature. The second one is a pressure gauge which monitors the critical pressure when the PET bottle explodes.  The range according to the makers is around 80 meters. The cost? $200.  The shoulder fired bazooka uses a simple chemistry principle. Fun, but serious so always use safety precautions.

Now, here’s a paintball turret that will level any opponent.  This thing throws a barrage of 34 balls per second.  We had looked at it earlier too but now the full plans for building your own are available.  The full blueprint can be downloaded from the Inventgeek site. The instructions come in three high-resolution full scale formats – Printable Gif, Corel Draw and EPS (for Ponoko). The detailed plans are scaled to actual size and the availability of kits from Ponoko.com makes this an off-the-shelf project. Plus the video demos help out. The only requirement – a fair expertise in tooling skills.

Inventgeek says that the project is still experimental and some tweaking may be needed. Improvements expected are a cheaper kit available from the site.

The final look is a refined double barreled weapons platform. It can be tacked as a wired or a wireless assembly. For defending your pride or the hill, you can also sling it on your shoulders for ‘portable deployment’.  Looking at the onslaught the paintball turret can pour out, you should make sure that you have a sufficient stockpile of paintball ammo.

A water canon is a great way to have fun and remain cool under the collar. The head mounted water canon is the latest weapon of wet destruction in town. It is not your average plastic squirter glued on to your helmet – it’s a combo of a pressurized stainless steel fire extinguisher and a motorcycle helmet.

It’s a fire on sight system – look and shoot a jet of water. The helmet with visor serves as protection against retaliatory attacks. The ammo is five gallons of icy cold water at 100psi. Water extinguishers are not used anymore so you probably will be able to scrounge yourself one. Though any helmet will do, we guess you would want to fuss over the look. A few other materials like a bicycle brake lever unit, diver’s backplate, vinyl tubing and a few components go into the assembly.

Its creator, John Young calls it The Ultimate Water Gun. Check out the photo stream and the video above. The detailed instructions show that the end result is not a child’s toy but a serious fun shooter. Make yourself one and go look for a fight. This vortex canon looks like a makeshift artillery piece built by an evil mad scientist. The super powered cannon creates a vortex of churning air or liquid caused by a rapid spiraling motion. This rapid spiral is then exerted in a forward motion through the barrel powerful enough to take down a brick wall. Basically, it’s like a mini tornadoes in a barrel.

This ‘weapon’ projects 200mph vortex rings generated from an explosive air-gas mix. The blast has enough force to knock down not only little huts of straw and sticks but a brick wall too in the simulated ‘Big Bad Wolf’ video below.

The video was captured at 1300 fps clearly shows the vortex pulse as it moves through the air with a sonic boom. Little straw huts or not…believe me, you wouldn’t want to be standing in its way. But man, how awesome would it be to own one!
