In my area, the WRT54GL was $129 versus the WRT54GS at $59 – in my area, both models are no longer sold in stores.
Also important to note that the perpetually reblogged ‘DD-WRT’ solutions only work with certain hardware revisions of certain models of Linksys WRT routers. My WRT54GS was NOT compatible with DD-WRT due to my hardware version being unsupported. I did not ignore DD-WRT information: I already owned my WRT54GS when I read about DD-WRT.
Personally, I like things that work, but we must use some sense to not imply everyone can do this with what they have on hand. Blogging shouldn’t promote obfuscation.

This is a great hack, thanks for sharing.
@spuffler, this article is very specific about using the wrt54gl. Had you read the linked guide one of the first items is a link to supported hardware. This list of hardware also includes a hard to miss link to hardware that is definitely not supported. your router is on that list. all this information, including finding the wrt54gl online for less than 60 bucks, took less than three minutes to find. I do not understand where the obfuscation comes in. Sorry for being obtuse

I like dd-wrt as well, but openwrt covers more models with more options….try that.
