The diodes that we get out of blu-ray DVD burners, are 405nm. This is not blue. It is a violet color that is near Ultra Violet.

I have a blue DPSS laser (473nm), and it has a blue beam.

Anyway, the beam is ‘bluish-violet’

wait, a sec… blu-ray is named after the colour of the laser it uses… so why is this beam purple? :O

Hmmm… I’m sure you could just find a way to attach a fiber optic cable to the front!

But I’m not really sure if that is what you were asking…

can we use use this key chain laser (erd laser)for optical fiber visual fault locator. launching into the fiber is the most difficult part i suppose

A hand held DIY laser will easily smoke wood, but not ignite it. Not normally anyway. You need a lot more power for that.

Making these are really easy once you learn how. But safety is very important, because they can instantly damage an eye. Check laserpointerforums.com for any and all information needed. The largest and best laser forum!

So could you just mod an average red laser pointer to be powerful enough to light a match, etc. without this kind of knowledge? If so, how? Oh, and could it light the wood part of the match, not just on the striking end?
