Believe it or not, it’s possible to take high quality photos of near-space using parts for under $150. It’s been done by a group of MIT students and hobbists and you can do it too. Typically this is done by simply lifting a camera as high as possible using a weather balloon until it pops. If space is a little too high for your tastes, learn the spectacular art of kite photography to capture incredible DIY photography shots.

Really cool idea. We may have to try that this winter. How do you lose something with a GPS receiver and a cell phone on it that’s sending back the coordinates, though? Did I misunderstand something about how this works?
