Make a DIY Sonar System using Arduino
Learn how to build a robot with built in visual sonar using sensors, an arduino, and Processing. The author supplies the code for Processing, an easy to learn programming tool for visualization. Processing gathers the sonar data from the Arduino and its sensors which it then displays on the screen as shown above. This sonar system will map a half circle of an area.

You’ll need some basic components such as a motor, sensor (specified in guide) and a PC. Other than that, it doesn’t look too hard to build and if you have experience with Arduino you could have the full project knocked out in a weekend.
