By simply sending an email to 1112223333@txt.att.net for example, you can send text messages to cell phones via email. This simple technology can also be applied to your DIY projects. For example, if you were creating a DIY security system, you could use your computer’s parallel port to automatically text you if your alarm goes off.

If you’ve got Cincinnati Bell Wireless it’s cellnumber@gocbw.com

Now I can type up a shopping list for hubby on the pc, instead of entering it in the phone, which takes forever, even using T9.
October 28th, 2008
Indeed, it’s nice to be able to just type a message instead of taking ages to text it. Thanks for the additional link adam.

Some networks handle email texts differently than others. Some transmit instantly and some take an hour or so to deliver.

So sorry to bump such an old thread but I had one question:
can you use this internationally? For instance I’ve got a friend in Canada and I’m txting her email address but it’s her phones email… Number@AT&T.net or whatever. Does this charge me?
February 24th, 2010
Yeah, I don’t see why not.
March 8th, 2010
This is how I communicate with my son when I travel internationally. My cell phone isn’t global, but I have internet service so this process allows me to contact him on his cell even though mine doesn’t work over here! Verizon works great
March 26th, 2010
You can also:
1, make a gmail account
2, go to contacts, add a contact name with phone number and save it
3, go to your inbox, on the right hand side or left there is a box that says chat..Click it and type in your contacts name, click send SMS and text them.they can reply, and a sound will play as well as the tab will flicker when they respond.
It’s easier if you have a back berry or android. anything that allows Microsoft exchange you should set it to automaticly back up your copntacts to gmail. This is good becuase:
1 all your contacts will be backed up
2 you wont have to add them in manually, and its always up to date when you add a new contact on your phone

do the texts from phone to email count as normal texts or extra stuff?
April 30th, 2010
I’ve never been charged any extra for it. Might want to check with your carrier though just in case.
May 2nd, 2010
if i email a text message to my cell can i reply to it with a pic?? and also will this count as internet usage??
May 3rd, 2010
No, it doesn’t count as internet, it just counts as a text (per my experience). I’m not sure if pictures work, I’ve never tried it. Give it a try and let us know how it goes.

Vocalogic offers an API for looking up the carrier for wireless phone numbers. It also returns the email addresses to send SMS and MMS messages to the phone.
The link is: http://www.vocalogic.com/sms_mms.php

Do you know what happens if the recipient tries to REPLY to the text message (that I just sent via email)?
For example, I sent a text message via email from gmail to my friend’s AT&T phone (USA). The text message says it’s from 1410000001.
Just wondering!
June 9th, 2010
it arrives as an email in their inbox
July 23rd, 2010
Does it cost extra on Sprint ?
July 23rd, 2010
Nope, no extra on any carrier that I know of.

AT&T lets you set up an alias as long as no one else is using it. So instead of 1234567890@txt.att.net, you can register an alias like jdoe47@@txt.att.net. This way, you don’t have to give out your phone number. See http://mymessages.wireless.att.com/do/phelp?l=en-US&v=att

If you are having problems with it not sending, Make sure your e-mail is formatted as PLAIN TEXT.
I have MS Outlook 2007 setup by default to send e-mail formatted as HTML, and if I don’t change it to plain text, some cell carriers ignore it, some try to send it as html, and some try to send it as a multimedia message. (We use this message for our volunteer call-up for emergencies)
