Using sensors, an old PC, LCD screen, lots of sensors and few X10 home automation parts, one man built a mini-house in his backyard packed full of electronics. The house also features a flickering LED fireplace and a Disneyland-like magic mirror. Although the house was built for two girls, the circuitry used is fantastic and you can learn plenty from the tutorial.
Update – You can now buy the software and hardware needed for the project at the DIY Magic Mirror website.

@Cori – The point is that the project’s clients are children and thus they don’t require cutting edge technology. Nonetheless, the creator went all out on the project.
