Electromagnetism packs quite a punch. Coil guns, like the one pictured above, use electromagnetic coils to push a ferromagnetic projectile rapidly through a barrel. How it works:
The physics behind it is actually pretty simple and the entire thing can be build from common parts. The outside of the coilgun is finished with housings made from plexiglass, wood and metal.
