Sure, the Segway looked cool initially, but it’s expensive and bulky. Here’s a much smaller, more portable human transport called the Treadway. Essentially, it’s a motor, battery, and wheel which you attach to the outside of your shoes.

Treadways are lightweight and feature directional control is via a wireless controller. The battery pack is worn on a belt around the waist and it is rechargeable using any electrical outlet. Full power on the prototype gives 15 mph. Watch the video to see the design changes the Treadway Mobility shoes went through.

That’s pretty cool, although with the combined fatness epidemic and desire to reduce carbon footprint, it might be better to replace the motors with generators and charge your laptop or cell phone as you walk under your own power. But if I remember correctly, that’s been done. Just be careful the bus drivers and police don’t think this is some kind of huge shoe-bomb…

I think bus drivers will be cool with it. They get impaired enough riders with mobility devices to know that the rider might have their own reasons.
I’m also expecting to see an updated version from Treadway that will have its motor built in to the drive chassis. The battery pack will get smaller too.
