You may recall a few years back when Phillips released their “Ambilight” TVs which displayed colors on the wall behind your TV for added effect. This DIY ambilight project promises to turn your laptop movie watching into a theater like experience. All it takes is a simple circuit that creates the backlight for a laptop.
We have seen how ambient lighting can be a visual treat for the senses, but this ambilight project is the best we’ve seen. Four RGB LEDs on the back of the laptop screen are controlled with an AVR ATtiny44 microcontroller. The lighting effect is controlled by software which analyses the display on the screen and sends the signal to the LEDs via USB. The entire project is hosted on Github so with a fair knowledge of electronics you shouldn’t have any difficulty to recreate the ambilight effect for yourself.
